How To " Tree Removal, and Stump Grinding"

Let me start by saying Tree Removal of any sizeable tree, especially near your home, or other structures should be left to Professionals.  The tools needed are a chainsaw, with sharpened teeth!, safety gear, such as eye goggles, chaps, ear plugs, and a hard hat.  First take a look at the natural lean of the tree.  Make sure that it's not leaning towards structures, or power lines.  If so Call a professional, it may require climbing, or the use of a crane to safely remove.  If you see no hazards begin by cutting the tree from the front of the side that you want to fall first.  Cut it about 1/3 thru.  Next cut a notch from the front by starting about 8-10 inches above the first cut angling to the end of the first cut.

Once you have removed your notch start cutting from the back of the tree about an inch or so above the front cut.  If the tree is large enough after your chain bar has cleared the back side of the tree you can us a steel wedge to help tip the tree.  As you cut hammer the wedge into the tree with a hammer, or maul.  If you are trying to make a precision drop insert about half the cutout wedge  back into the front cut to help guide the tree.  Leave some space so that the tree will lean properly.  Continue to cut, and drive the wedge until the tree starts falling, then yell Timber!!! and run like heck!  Just kidding, but do make sure that you have plenty of space to clearout.

Once you have dropped the tree you will have the stump left.  I suggest grinding it out.  This is done with whats called a Stump Grinder.  It's a gas powered machine that cuts the stump with a high speed cutting wheel, and carbide steel teeth.  You will have to call around to a few commercial rental centers to locate one.  Always wear safety equipment, goggles, gloves, and a hard hat preferrably with a face shield, ear protection.  Trust me you will be glad that you did.  These machines are loud, and throw a lot of debris.  Start by grinding any roots that are above ground.  Then move to the stump.  Slowly swing the cutting wheel from side to side, lowering the cutting wheel about a half inch each cut until the stump is about six inches below surface.  Then raise the cutting wheel, move forward a few inches to restart the process until the whole stump has been removed.  You will be left with a large pile of tree mulch.

If you have done all of this it time for cleanup.  You can haul it all away to the local dump, or if its hard wood maybe you can give it away to someone that burns wood.  I hope that you find this article helpful.  If you are in the Raleigh, Cary NC area, and need Professional  help contact us.
